Irmo SC was established in the mid 18th century. The Cherokee Indians roamed the waterways and woodlands while following the Cherokee Trail, but German and Swiss immigrants were the first Westerners to settle here. Using land grants from the King of England, the Germans settled and established self-sufficient farms in spite of the rocky, red clay that was unsuitable for plantation farming. In 1890 Irmo was incorporated and flourished. The largest earthen dam in the world (at that time) was built a quarter of a century later, forming Lake Murray. The dam, along with the construction of I-26 adjacent to Irmo in the late 1950's, made possible the continuing rapid growth of the greater Irmo area. Today, Irmo has a population of 11,039 with a median family income of $44,349.00 and approximately 7,349 Irmo residents are employed (16 years and older). In 2007 Money Magazine recognized Irmo as the 12th “Most Affordable Place to Live in the Country”. Many people in the Midlands move to the Irmo area for its above average school system, quality of life and enjoyable lifestyle. |
