Lake Murray is a skiing, boating, swimming and camping paradise It was originally constructed in the 1930’s as a hydroelectric generating facility, but has become a major recreation spot in the Columbia/Lexington/Irmo/Chapin area and is much enjoyed by thousands of people. Lake Murray is also the major source of drinking water for the City of Columbia. The Lake is 41 miles long and 14 miles wide and covers an area of 78 square miles with 649 miles of shoreline. Fishing is another past time that is enjoyed by many on this beautiful lake. Fishing tournaments are hosted here due to the large number of fish species; the most popular are Brim, Striped Bass, Largemouth Bass and crappie. All this makes Lake Murray a great place to live! |
